Digital sovereignty

Your data. Your servers. Your decision.

Digital sovereignty means you decide where your business data lives, who accesses it and how easily you could switch. VertooERP makes that a matter of architecture – not a promise.

What is digital sovereignty?

Digital sovereignty is a company’s ability to decide over its own data, systems and digital dependencies. It covers data sovereignty (where data lives, who can access it), freedom of choice in the operating model (self-hosting instead of forced cloud) and exit capability through open standards and export formats. For SMEs it is the foundation of digital resilience: those in control can act when disruptions, price changes or legal shifts occur – instead of waiting.

Why now

Three reasons this belongs on the agenda

Concentration on a few providers

Large parts of company IT run on a handful of international cloud platforms. That concentrates risk when prices, terms or products change.

Legal uncertainty around third-country access

The US CLOUD Act allows US authorities to compel US providers to hand over data – in principle even when it is stored outside the USA. How this squares with European data protection law remains legally contested.

Regulatory focus on cybersecurity

With NIS2, the EU extends cybersecurity and reporting duties to far more companies. Risk management is becoming a leadership responsibility – whoever is in scope in detail.

How VertooERP delivers

Sovereignty as architecture, not a label

Self-hosting / on-premises

VertooERP runs as a licence on your own or rented infrastructure. Your core processes do not depend on a third-party cloud.

Data stays in-house

Master data, orders, invoices and costings live where you decide – with backups under your control.

Local AI instead of an AI cloud

The AI assistant works as a local language model via Ollama. Even AI analysis never leaves your company.

Open export formats

DATEV export, XRechnung/ZUGFeRD and CSV keep the door open – against vendor lock-in, for real exit capability.

GDPR- & GoBD-compliant

Data protection and audit-proof accounting are built in – including immutable audit trails.

Built in Germany for Europe

Short paths, German-language support and a product built for European requirements.

To be honest

Sovereignty is not free: with self-hosting, operations, updates and backups sit with you or your IT service provider. Setup, hosting and maintenance are available separately with VertooERP – you decide how much responsibility you carry yourself and what a partner takes over.

FAQ

Digital sovereignty in practice

What does digital sovereignty mean concretely for an SME?

Three things: you know and decide where your business data lives. You can keep your core processes running even if an external provider changes prices, terms or products. And you can switch with reasonable effort, because your data is exportable in open formats.

Does self-hosting automatically make us GDPR- or NIS2-compliant?

No. No product makes a company compliant by itself – compliance always includes processes and organisation. Self-hosting does give you the control that makes many requirements easier to meet: you know where data lives, who accesses it and how it is backed up. VertooERP supports this with GDPR-compliant features and GoBD-compliant audit trails.

Do we need our own IT department for this?

Not necessarily. Self-hosting means operations and backups must be owned – by you or an IT service provider of your choice. Setup, hosting and maintenance are available separately with VertooERP, so teams without in-house IT can run sovereignly too.

How do we avoid vendor lock-in?

By settling the exit question before signing: in which formats does your data come back out? VertooERP builds on established standards such as the DATEV format, XRechnung/ZUGFeRD and CSV exports – your data stays readable and portable.
